Design process of variable fonts

Digital medium has provided changes in access, distribution and consumption of information. Thus,
several elements are served, such as texts, videos and images. In this sense, text is configured as the
main form used to transmit information, as well as having relevance in accessibility features. Digital
technologies also have caused transformations in the field of design, both in design practice and in
the products developed. Therefore, the need for adequate processes to meet the demands for digital
media and the different components that involve design, such as typography, is described. This area,
which covers the creation and application of orthographic and para-orthographic symbols, also has
its own characteristics and specificities for the digital environment. In order to meet the demands of
this medium, typographic formats were created, such as variable fonts, which incorporate different
variations in a single file, providing space savings and responsiveness for fonts. Despite being a
resource announced almost 30 years ago, academic studies on variable sources are still scarce.
Considering the above, the present research has the general objective of proposing a framework for
the design process of variable fonts.
